Oh, Holt and Maddy... You make my heart pitter patter. The chemistry between these 2 characters is off the charts and although you want to shake them at times for their insecurities and doubts I couldn't help but love them. Maddy is understandably withdrawn and standoffish given her past, while Holt has had a rough go of it too. Separately they shine but together they sparkle. She's such a giving, loving woman, while he is fiercely protective and loyal. After suffering a tragic loss Holt is scared to love again but Maddy opens up his heart in ways he never thought possible. They bring out the best in each other and I wasn't ready for their story to end. As always the case with Ms. Montgomery's books I finished this in one day and eagerly await her next work of art.

Michelle Irwin has been many things in her life: a hobbit taking a precious item to a fiery mountain; a young child stepping through the back of a wardrobe into another land; the last human stranded not-quite-alone in space three million years in the future; a young girl willing to fight for the love of a vampire; and a time-travelling madman in a box. She achieved all of these feats and many more through her voracious reading habit. Eventually, so much reading had to have an effect and the cast of characters inside her mind took over and spilled out onto the page.

Michelle lives in sunny Queensland in the land down under with her surprisingly patient husband and ever-intriguing daughter, carving out precious moments of writing and reading time around her accounts-based day job. A lover of love and overcoming the odds, she primarily writes paranormal and fantasy romance.

REVIEW

[Patti]

Amazon/Goodreads rating: 5/5
In Patti's Imagination rating: 10/10

Little did I know that I'd feel compelled to read HIS until I was done, even if that meant heading to bed at 3 am. Then again, I should have expected a book hangover from this author.

The synopsis tells you straight away that this story will involve two main characters whose lives should be completely different - a filthy rich man and a homeless woman, it should be a Cinderella tale, right? Wrong. So wrong. And that's exactly why this is such a fantastic read. From the moment you meet Quinn, you see how strong - but also how vulnerable - she is. Andrew sees that, too. Add some explosive chemistry, a slow burn, some twists and turns, and you'll be along for one exciting ride.

I've always been a big Brenda Rothert fan. Her books seem to suck me into their world every time, and this one was no different. It's a well-paced read, with great flow and a good balance between the romance and the rest of the plot. The build, the momentum, and the tension all reflected what I've come to expect from this author. If you've read her work and enjoyed it, you will not be disappointed. Quinn and Andrew belong aside all the best of her characters. If you haven't read her work, this standalone story is a great place to start.

EXCERPT

Prologue

September 28, 2001

Andrew

Seventeen days ago, my life caught fire.
Two planes. Two towers. Nothing will ever be the same.

The fire at Ground Zero is still burning, and somewhere inside the smoky piles of rubble is my father. Do I want them to find him? For the first week, I did. I stayed home from school every day and stared at the TV, praying I’d see them pull my dad from what’s left.

I told myself over and over that he couldn’t be gone. David Wentworth was too strong to be taken down like that. He’d show them all. My dad would come crawling out of the pile of debris, still wearing his dark suit. He’d probably pull other people out, too. My dad is like that. He does things people say are impossible.

But the second week, my mom said I had to go back to school. When I told her I wouldn’t go because I was waiting for my dad to be rescued, her shoulders fell.

“He’s gone, Andrew.”

“You don’t know that. Dad’s a fighter.”

She shook her head. “I know it’s hard for a thirteen-year-old to wrap his head around. I know. You want him to be here, and I do, too. But he’s gone. It’s just you and me now.”

I glared at her, my throat burning. How could she give up on him like that? I’d never give up on my dad. I went back to my spot in his favorite leather chair in our living room and turned up the news on TV.

But after two weeks, my school counselor came to our house to see me. He frowned and told me no one could survive for two weeks in there. Then he gave me a pamphlet titled, “It’s Okay to Cry.” I crumpled up his advice on grieving and threw it in the trash.

I wasn’t going to cry. My dad wouldn’t want that. He’d always told me a man’s true measure was his strength.

“Chin up, Andrew. You’re a Wentworth. We’re made of steel.”

Today we’re having a memorial service for him. My chin will stay up, and my back will stay straight. When I look at the family pictures of my parents and me on a long table at the funeral home and my eyes start to feel watery, I pinch my leg through the pocket of my suit pants. The burning sting in my thigh makes me angry instead of sad.

Better. Dad used to yell at people from his company sometimes, so I know he wouldn’t mind me being angry. At night, when I’m staring up at the stars me and Dad stuck on my ceiling when I was little, my stomach twists and hurts with the anger I feel for the men who killed my dad.

They murdered thousands of people. I’m not the only kid without a dad now. Everyone is scared. Nothing will ever be the same.

My mom covers her mouth with her hand, crying as one of her friends squeezes her arm and talks to her. They did that, too. They made my mom cry. My dad wouldn’t stand for that.

Since he’s gone, I have to be the strong one now. I have to take care of my mom like he would. I have to think about what dad would want for us. I have to hold on tight to my need for those men to pay for what they did to my dad.

The firefighters will eventually extinguish the smoldering fire at Ground Zero, but the fire burning inside of me will never go out.

BLOG TOUR -- Yessi Smith's PIECES OF CAMDEN

Title: Pieces of Camden
Author: Yessi Smith
Genre: New Adult

This is a story of love.
And hate.
Loss.
And struggle.
Self-preservation.
And addiction.
Then there’s Yanelys Sanchez—the one who made the journey worthwhile. She was the one who picked up my broken pieces, smoothed out the rough edges, and made me whole.
At least as much as I can be.
I’m still failing, still recovering, still trying. I’m only human—drunk on the idea that she, and only she, can save me.

This review is not going to be an easy one to write without giving away any spoilers. Make sure you have plenty of tissues on hand while reading this emotional story of love, hate, loss, struggles, self-preservation and addiction.  This book was intense and difficult to read because of the dark subject matter but it's well worth the read.
Camden has not had an easy life.  His childhood was one of abuse but finds his salvation and happiness in Yanelys and her family. When Camden finally finds some happiness another event occurs to change all that.
There is so much turmoil in his life and the topics that are covered in this book are not easy but the author did an excellent job in discussing them is a very realistic way.  Plus, add in the unexpected twists, this is one book you will not be able to put down.  My heart was breaking for Camden throughout the book. The title says is so well as there are so many pieces of him that have to be found and put together to make him whole.
This book is more than a five star read and I will be reading more from this author.

With his shoulders slumped and his eyes downcast, I can hardly see the boy I once knew. But he’s in there somewhere, and every part of me wants to find him. More than that, I want Camden to find himself.
Whatever I’ve been through without him is nothing compared to what he’s been through. Forgiveness creeps into my heart, slightly freeing me of the weight I’ve carried for seven long years.
I can’t hate the boy who left me any more than I can prevent my lungs from breathing.
Smiling broadly, I take Camden’s hand, and he laces his fingers through mine.
Warm familiarity sears into my skin while butterflies explode in my stomach, expelling the knot I just had moments ago. Turning on the tips of my feet, I spin around to face him. He arches an eyebrow, and I laugh.
He’s still my Camden.
He might have left me, but he also gave me the best parting present imaginable.
Without reservation, I tightly wrap my arms around his stomach and rest my head on his chest, listening to his erratic heartbeat.
So skinny, I think when I reach around and clasp my hands behind his back.
Camden doesn’t hesitate as he puts his arms around me, leaning his head on top of mine.
“You left me,” I whisper into his chest.
He lifts his head and takes my hair out of the bun. He begins to comb his fingers through my hair and I hold back a sigh. “I know.”
Two words. That’s all it takes to break my resolve.
Face flushed with resentment, I push off of him and square my shoulders. “You left me with just a memory!” I accuse. “You tore me to pieces, and now? Now, you want to come back into my life. No. No, no, no, Camden! You don’t get to pick and choose when I’m convenient.”
I shove him again, each shove getting harder, until his back is against the wall. Tears stream down my face, the witnesses of my despair. When I move to walk away from him, Camden takes ahold of my hand and brings me to him. He wraps his arms around me, pressing my body to his, until we are flush with one another. Struggling in his grasp, I lift my head to yell at him, but he crushes his lips against mine.
“I’m sorry,” he murmurs against my mouth. “I’m sorry, Yan. I’m sorry,” he continues to whisper between the light kisses he presses into me.
The taste of his despair is my undoing, so I kiss him back. Harder, wanting to take away his pain.
When we finally separate, we look at each other, breathless. Words go unspoken as our panting settles.
