REVIEW:
Book 1: BESIEGED BY RAIN
[Flora]
After reading the Daughter of Fire series, I read the Son of Rain books. While the Fire books are from the point of view of Evie and Rain books are written from Clay’s point of view. I was a bit septical of this idea of telling the same story just through another character’s eyes. I thought the story would be redundant, but I was so very wrong.
The woman of Clay’s dreams is haunting him, Is it because she is so forbidden? Is it because she is so beautiful? Is it that she has some secret superpower that has bewitched him to go against his training, his beliefs, his family's traditions? His family are members of a secret organisation who rid the world of monsters. He always thought anything not human was an abomination and should be killed to protect humankind. Clay is a sophisticatedly trained member of an elite force that complains about his brother using the last of the milk.
Magnolias left on a doorstep, a romantic gesture to show he was so in love with Evie, his girl, his obsession. It was a daring move because he could be killed and his whole family would be in jeopardy as well, but he couldn't stay away after spending so much time and energy just to find her. Evie however did not see the magnolias as romantic after the way she left abruptly after a fight with Clay. He gets her to meet him and they spend time together as if they never left each other’s side, but Clay’s family finds him and devastates everyone’s lives.
Evie must flee again for her life and Clay is sent for “re-training.” After he is returned to his former duties at Rain, he feels conflicted by his training that all non-humans are monsters and his experience with Evie, a monster, a phoenix. Her story in the Daughter of Fire series and this Clay’s point of view together have totally put this saga into a new and exciting tale of star crossed lovers. As always I find Michelle Irwin’s novels to be complex, and emotional. Her well written story is a pleasure to read. The details matter. The real, well rounded character are easy to identify with. I can’t wait to read the next book in this companion series.

Book 2 Among the Debris (Free until 31st)
REVIEW:
Book 2: AMONG THE DEBRIS
[Flora]
After losing each other again, Clay and Evie come together in Salem at a witches convention. Rain is there to “save” the world of non-humans and kill innocent women. Clay loves Evie but when he is with his family again he questions Evie. Did she bewitch him? Could his family have been right all along?
In order to find the truth of his obsession he searches around the world to prove he was being lied to from his girl or his family. It is a journey to find Evie’s true nature but it seems getting answers is not going to be easy. He convinces his family and the rain that he needs to time away to get his head back in the game. He is allowed to leave the country and goes to England to find a woman in Evie’s file that may know more about the Phoenix and the Songbird.
It is amazing how much I have learned about the mythology surrounding Evie and others from this book. Michelle Irwin has me emotional and wanting to see Clay and Evie succeed. It is heartbreaking to think that these two keep being torn apart. The romeo and Juliet influences are not lost on this reader. It is amazing how reading these books have added such dimension to the series. I love how the books overlap but are not very redundant. I love how Clay has such inner turmoils. The characters are real and complex. I fell in love with Clay in book one with the dates and now with his protective nature I am smitten even more. While this book could be read without reading the Daughter of Fire series, it would be beneficial to the deeper knowledge the books are conveying.

Book 3 Court the Fire (99c preorder)
Michelle Irwin has been many things in her life: a hobbit taking a precious item to a fiery mountain; a young child stepping through the back of a wardrobe into another land; the last human stranded not-quite-alone in space three million years in the future; a young girl willing to fight for the love of a vampire; and a time-travelling madman in a box. She achieved all of these feats and many more through her voracious reading habit. Eventually, so much reading had to have an effect and the cast of characters inside her mind took over and spilled out onto the page.
Michelle lives in sunny Queensland in the land down under with her surprisingly patient husband and ever-intriguing daughter, carving out precious moments of writing and reading time around her accounts-based day job. A lover of love and overcoming the odds, she primarily writes paranormal and fantasy romance.
