REVIEW

[Connie]
Amazon/Goodreads rating: 5/5
In Patti's Imagination rating: 10/10
This book is about a man who lives in London and drives a truck. When we first meet "Z" he has just gotten word that his wife wants a divorce. She believes that he will always be a truck driver and will never amount to anything. He actually has a law degree. Some friends of his decide that he should join some Internet dating sites, and that is really where all the fun begins. Some of the things that happen to him are laugh out loud funny. With a co-worker he goes to Scotland to stay at a lodge. There he meets Penny and they become friends. Penny gets him to try some of the Internet dating sites and report back to her what happens. I was gifted this book for a fair and honest review.

EXCERPT

When first I met my now estranged wife during our Master’s year at university, I was seeing someone else too. In the main, this defines me as a “bastard”, although I preferred to think of myself as a “player”. Indeed I would argue that it falls under the guise of “sowing wild oats”. That’s the phrase that makes the practice somehow acceptable, and mothers the world over tell their sons that this is what they need to do before they settle down. The rite of passage into manhood as it were. At least, it’s what my mother told me. Women may argue this point - sorry, women will argue this point - but then they become mothers.
Naturally, they just don’t want those “wild oats” sown with their own daughters.
However, it is a fallacy to think that we men are completely heartless. I realised that I actually liked the girl that I eventually married so quickly ended all contact with the third party. In actual fact, she was a girl that I had been seeing first but only by a matter of a few weeks. I got the usual tirade of “bastard” texts, emails, and drunken voicemails. “I thought you were different” being the obligatory phrase that she just had to use during every one of these “opportunities”. In one particular instance, during which she also branded me a “coward”, I foolishly responded. I explained to her that I was merely being cruel to be kind as it was blatantly obvious to me that there we had no future together. Furthermore, after everything that had been said and done – more on her part now than mine - she would surely realise and accept that there was no going back as any trust and respect that had been built was now completely shattered.
I got the following reply:
“See, I knew you were different. That was lovely, you thinking of me and my feelings and us and our future. Why can’t we make this work? We can, you just have to trust yourself to trust me. Call me.”
It took another six weeks of ignoring and blocking her before she finally gave up. We had only been dating, if it could ever have been called that, for three weeks.
It takes true courage and bravery to finish any relationship. As my marital separation was only a week old, I understood that there may be some element of hope that we could fix it and move on. Yet I knew there was no way I could, or would, allow myself to stoop to such a level of indignity. My sense of pride has taken a pounding and is undoubtedly battered and bruised, but it is still there, standing tall and intact, however weakly. It is also getting stronger with every passing day.
All thanks to “Hope”.
“Hope” is a very strange feeling that displaces others such as “confidence”, “faith”, and “trust” and one that I have naturally gravitated towards my entire life. We are old friends, hope and I. Never have I dared to have “confidence” in my academic or sporting abilities, rather I always “hoped” that I would perform at my best as necessitated in any particular circumstance. When things had gone better than I had even dared “hope”, then I defaulted to the notion that is was merely my “good luck”, and vice versa. “Luck” has always provided me an excuse for all of life’s highs and lows and everything in between. Now I wanted to change all that. Now I wanted to control my existence.
Now I wanted to stir the stagnant pool that is my life proactively to feel like I am living again.
So that may well explain why I am now sat in only my boxer shorts in front of my computer, as the rain batters the window behind my curtains, and trying to focus on completing an online dating profile that includes a “personal statement” section. Apparently, its purpose is to allow me to describe myself in as broadly generic terms as possible in order to seem “normal” and “average” - and so maximising my appeal - whilst also trying to ensure that I am unique enough as to stand out. The logic of the concept is irrefutable and yet fantastically ridiculous.
It is also proving so challenging to the point of being quite impossible.
As a truck driver, I work most weekends and so this job commitment removes the more conventional ways of meeting women. Using a dating site makes far more sense in this new age of technology as it allows for an immediate connection without the need to wait for the weekend, or the demand of a decent chat up line. It cuts to the chase, so to speak. The site has posted a statistic that states over 28% of couples now “meet” online, so I am still happily in the minority. However, it is utterly galling to me that I should ever try to be “normal” or “average” to anyone as I have never considered myself as such.
It seems to me to be morally fraudulent.
Online dating. It really is quite an absurd concept yet totally in concert with the modern era where people are too busy with work and life to take the time and make the effort for actually dating. Yet where is the romance of it? You will never hear a love song that refers to such sites. Can you imagine Rod Stewart singing “The Algorithm of my Heart”, or some such like?
No? Me neither.

Synopsis
Killian Bosch knows he’s his own worst enemy – he just doesn’t give a damn. The star forward of a minor league hockey team, he’s unstoppable on the ice. His reckless behavior, devil-may-care attitude and complete disregard for consequences have made him a major source of headaches for the Fenway Flyers’ brass. But the new Flyers owner is more steel than brass. Sidney Stahl is a disciplined woman who parlayed earnings from a college job into a real estate empire. She’s determined to transform the Flyers from marketing nightmare to hockey powerhouse. Once she gets Killian in line, she knows the rest of the team will follow his lead.
The seduction of his sexy new team owner is a challenge too forbidden for Killian to resist. Sidney plays into his attraction as a means of controlling him, but soon finds that she’s the one surrendering. It’s all on the line as Killian and Sidney are forced to choose - business or pleasure?

[Patti]
Amazon/Goodreads rating: 5/5
In Patti's Imagination rating: 10/10

I absolutely loved the Fire on Ice series, and I'm a huge hockey fan, so I expected to enjoy the first book in Brenda's ON THE LINE series. What surprised me was how easily Killian Bosch managed to push every sexy button and draw me into his orbit the same way he does Sidney. Though I loved all the Fire on Ice stories, my favorite was Edge. There was something about Luke that appealed to me on many levels, maybe even including the reformation of a bad boy. Killian now ties with Luke and Ben (Now and Again, Now and Forever) as my favorite of Brenda's leads. The rest of the guys in On the Line will have to work extra hard to knock Killian from his post of best in this series.

Sidney was fabulous. One thing I loved about her was that, in spite of what she does give up for Killian, she never compromises her sense of self. He enriches her already great life, fills it more, rounds her edges, but never changes the fundamentals of who Sidney is. For her part, Sidney helps Killian get back to the place where he fell off his axis, but she doesn't demand it or even ask him to be better for her. He wants that, and there is nothing sexier than a man who knows how to love with his whole self. Add a dirty mouth and a woman who can't say no to him (and doesn't want to), and you've found a great combination of hot and sweet.

Another home run for Brenda that leaves me excited for this next series and a little less disappointed to say goodbye to the boys of Fire on Ice.

Excerpt
My mind was jerked back to the present when I became aware the coach had moved on from his teaching lesson.

“The new owner’s upstairs watching practice,” Orion announced, giving us the evil eye. We all looked up in the direction of the owner’s box, but I couldn’t see anyone standing inside. Orion turned to Bruce, the Flyers assistant coach, and spoke in a voice loud enough that no one could miss what he was saying, “Bruce, did we not have a meeting with the new owner before practice this morning?” Bruce nodded his agreement. “Tell me if I remember this right, Bruce.” Orion continued. “Did she tell us this team will be undergoing some major changes? That we’ll be making cuts and bringing in new talent?”

“That’s right, Coach,” Bruce said in an even tone. Sighs and shuffling from around me indicated nervousness. I had nothing to worry about. I was the captain of the team and probably the best player here, though Bennett was a very close second. But the idea of cutting the dead weight got my attention. I was as disgusted as Orion with the record of our team. It was fucking embarrassing. He’d been brought in by the new ownership to turn things around and it sounded like that was about to happen.

“I’ve been here two weeks,” he said. “I’ve given all of you a chance to show me you want to be on this team. Starting today, there’ll be one on one meetings between some of you and the new owner. Later on, Bruce and I will talk to each of you individually to let you know who’s staying and who’s going. Now back to the fucking play, boys.” As we turned to get back in line, Orion called Liam’s name. “You’re up first with the owner,” he said. “You know where her office is?”

My head swiveled to look at Orion. Her? The new owner was a woman? Fucking hell. A woman wouldn’t be able to make the tough decisions this team needed to recover from its place at the bottom of the league. And what about Liam? He was a quiet, solid player on the first line. What the hell did the new ownership want with him? I wanted to go with him to that meeting, but that was never going to happen. Liam skated over to the bench and I glanced back up at the owner’s box, glowering. Anybody who fucked with Liam was also fucking with me. I had nothing to lose, and a man with nothing to lose was never someone you wanted to fuck with. Especially not by some woman who thought she could overhaul this team and turn things around. Others had tried and failed. She would be no different.

REVIEW - B.L. Berry's LOVE NOUVEAU

Title: Love Nouveau (The Art of Falling, #1)
Author: B.L. Berry
Publisher: B.L. Berry
Publishing Date: September 27, 2014

REVIEW

[Patti]
Amazon/Goodreads rating: 5/5
In Patti's Imagination rating: 9.6/10

There are two main reasons why a book gets an automatic 5-stars on Amazon and Goodreads from me. One is that I have a visceral reaction to the characters - love them, hate them, I have to react. The other is when a book sticks with me in a way that inspires a physical reaction. You know what I mean, right? An, "Oh, my GOD! I can't believe..." or "Wow. Just...wow," which has me shaking a fist, or jumping up and down, or grinning ear to ear. Well, Love Nouveau accomplished both of those tasks. As soon as I finished, I wasn't sure if I loved or hated the author, or maybe a little of both simultaneously. I knew I had some strong feelings about the characters (ahem).

Ultimately, this first book in the series is about the journey to self-acceptance. Poor Ivy, she has a lot of bumps along the way. Some of which she could never have expected, others I think she knew all along were steps in the process. I will admit, in the first few pages, I didn't like her much. But she grew and changed, even more than she had in her year abroad (which wasn't detailed to any great degree, only noted for the sake of the story). If a character is unlikable for me, they have to improve. Call me an optimist. That was absolutely true of Ivy, and though she did some really stupid, childish things later in the story, it was easier to forgive her for it because she was so self-aware at the time, so instantly remorseful. When the ultimate betrayal happens, though she falls, she stands again, keeps moving, doesn't let it get her down. Yeah, she's my kind of girl. Lemonade from lemons.

Phoenix. Oh, Phoenix. That boy? I loved him from the outset. The emotional connection between Ivy and Phoenix was palpable, and I wanted so badly for them to get their happily ever after. I think the distance in their relationship worked best here because of who Ivy was and how she needed to grow, but man, I cannot wait to see the two of them together on an intimate level. *fans self* Phoenix got the blood pumping without getting naked. Who does that? Phoenix, that's who. I just hope he lives up to his name.

And now, I am both elated and pissed. As I should be! That was the intent of the epilogue, I am sure of it. The little tease at the end made me desperate to hear the rest of this story. I will warn you, if you do not like cliffhangers, then skip the epilogue for now. You will be happy and satisfied with the ending of the story if you avoid it. And then, when it's time to read the second book, go back and read that epilogue and it will make you dive into the next piece, I'm sure of it.

Overall, this was a fantastic read, and I can't wait for more from this author. I'm really hoping that we get Phoenix's point of view in the next book. And I see plenty of room for stories from other characters, if the author intended to go that route. Between the art history references (my first college degree), the music, the amazing characters - primary and secondary - and a beautiful love story, this is definitely on my list of books to recommend.

EXCERPT

I was no longer a bystander to this story. I was the story. Every secret interwoven through the tale I’m about to tell you belongs to me. And the summer I graduated from high school was the summer everything came together in a horrible clash of good versus evil.
Packing up and leaving my small, inconsequential, southeast Texas hometown meant leaving part of myself behind. I said goodbye to the human side of me when we piled into David’s truck and drove away from our home. And I waved farewell to any hope of ever returning as I watched our home slip into the shades of night.
Everything had been turned upside down, and deciding what was good and what was evil was like looking through sunglasses at night. It all washed together in a murky blend of darkness, shadows, and secrets.
My biggest secret of all was one for which I had no answer: which one was I – good or evil? I stuffed that secret deep behind my ribs and swallowed it down.
Some secrets are best kept in the darkness away from prying eyes and those who would seek to face them head-on. Some secrets kill.

A Love For Somnus By Nicole Garcia

Title: A Love For Somnus
Author: Nicole Garcia
Series: A Roman God Romance Book 2
Publication Date: February 14th, 2015

REVIEW

Amazon Rating: 5/5
In Patti's Imagination Rating: 10/10

This author's work isn't a novelty to me, so it is not strange that still after so many books I rate her work with the highest rating. Why? It's simple really. I just love the way she writes and captures the attention of a reader from the very first sentence. I love that I can read her book and just take myself into the world she writes without struggle.

This story was, I believe, hard for her to write. It's emotional, very emotional, as it was for me to read it. So much things revealing themselves. So many secrets discovered. So many people's lives ruined before to be corrected with actions taken in this time.

You can find a whole new world on just these 111 pages. A world where you have drama, friends, family, tragedy, suspense. I experienced it all. And I hope some others will, because I can certainly say this book is worth reading.

REVIEW - Stephanie Reid's TRUST IN ME (Protector, #2)

Title: Trust in Me
Author: Stephanie Reid
Publication Date: January 29, 2015

[Patti]
Amazon/Goodreads rating: 5/5
In Patti's Imagination rating: 9.6/10

I think the biggest difference for me between this book and the last was that I really liked the female lead, Sandra. Though strong on many levels, she was imperfect (and knew it). Over the course of the story, she grew and changed. It made an impact on my enjoyment level to easily empathize with her.

Nick, our undercover cop, was a fantastic male lead. Alpha to his core and a protector by nature, he was flawed and had some issues to overcome. He does that and then some. With some great supporting characters, like Gus and David, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Characters, as I've always said, are the biggest reason why I love or hate a book, and these were well-drawn. So much that I think the story could be moved to any appropriately suburban/urban location and would probably work just fine.

My actual rating on this is probably 4.5 rather than 5, but I'm rounding up this time, because anything I didn't love failed to detract from the bits I did. Looking forward to Jason's story next!

I received this in exchange for an honest review. This review also appears on Goodreads and Amazon.

~ REVIEW ~
[Patti]
Amazon/Goodreads rating: 5/5
In Patti's Imagination rating: 9.5/10

Let me start by saying that this was one of those happy accidents you know must have been meant to happen. Yes, I'm talking about me finding this book, but I could say the same about Phil and Kenna, too. But back to the book. Kelli approached the blog about a review after I'd posted on another page, and as soon as I read the synopsis, I was hooked on the idea. To know that it was the first in a 3-part story? Yeah, that excited me. I love anything that's remotely serial in nature. So, going into the book, I was excited and also worried. See, I'd gotten to know Kelli a bit while I waited for the ARC, and thought, "What if I hate it?"

Well, no worries there! I absolutely LOVED this book. I'm not one to gravitate toward the harder-edged stories (Rock Star, MC, etc), but these characters, they grabbed me from the beginning. The fact that I had never lived life the way they do (and never would) meant nothing. I fell into their world and I adored every second. Characters, for me, make or break a story. The leads must grab me somehow - I have to love or hate them, feel something. That was never a question in this book. Phil is as magnetic as you'd expect any lead singer to be, and despite the fact that I wanted to smack him - often! - I loved him anyway.

And Kenna...oh, Kenna, I love her. She reminds me, in the very best ways, of another favorite red-haired, part-Scottish, giant of a woman, Brianna Randall Fraser MacKenzie from Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. Many people grumble about Brianna, but I love her. Maybe it's because she's an engineer. Either way, Kenna's strength of mind and her sense of self remind me of that other character (not to mention her looks), and so I'd love her anyway. But she burrowed into my heart. I desperately want her to get a HEA! She so deserves it.

Peppered with additional supporting characters whose stories I MUST hear (hint, hint, Kelli, if you don't have that in the works!), this book is not just EPIC, as I've seen others say, it's truly a SAGA. I cannot wait to read the rest! Be forewarned - as I was from the beginning - that this is PART 1. It is not the whole story, so don't get your panties in a bunch. If you need ALL of a story before you want to start it, then wait for book 3 in the fall. But when you finally sit down to read it, be sure to give yourself a lot of time to devour the story. I guarantee that Phil, Kenna and the gang of NOLA's Own will suck you into their orbit for a time, and you will loathe having to leave them.

A truncated version of this review will appear on Amazon and Goodreads.

At one point in my life, I was painfully shy and introverted. It led to obsessive reading and a select group of close friends that I have had almost my whole life.

No longer shy (I don't know how that happened, it just did), I developed a horrendously foul mouth, and this tendency to find humor in almost any situation, and this diabolical need to speak my mind. It sometimes gets me into trouble.

REVIEW - Brenda Rothert's RELEASE (Fire on Ice, #5)

Author: Brenda Rothert
Title: Release
Series: Fire on Ice, #5
Release Date: December 13, 2014

Review

[Patti]
Amazon/Goodreads rating: 5/5
In Patti's Imagination rating: 9.5/10

I've loved every book in this series, and as I've said before, I can't imagine a Brenda Rothert book that would get less than 3 stars from me. Her writing always captures my interest. In the case of Orion and Samara, I absolutely enjoyed them as characters at least as much as Niko and Sadie, and almost as much as Ryke and Kate. I still love Dell and Luke the most. One of the best things about Orion and Samara was that they were not a typical hockey couple - a hallmark of the series, maybe - but theirs was a different dynamic than you might have predicted.

Let's start with Orion, who is almost everything opposite of what you'd expect in a hockey player in a novel. I LOVE that! Mostly because, while I knew a lot of hockey players who were just that - players - I also knew a few who had long-term girlfriends and wanted to focus on the game, not the play. That he's also smokin' hot in the bedroom is a bonus. Don't get me started on his selflessness. I'm thrilled that he'll surely be appearing in the spinoff series.

Samara had issues - lots of them - and though she began as a weak female, she grew so much over the course of the story. Her confidence increased, not so much because Orion loved her, but because she learned how to love herself. This is pretty much the only way I can forgive a weak female character, if she's going to find her spine (I like it best when she does it on her own). Bravo, Brenda, for the execution there.

The love story between these two was hot and sweet, fun and frisky. Above all, it felt real. I'm sad to see the series end, because it's a favorite. I'll continue to recommend it to others. If you haven't read the series, start with Bound and plan to read the rest (Captive, Edge, Drive, Release) until you're done with them all. A great wrap-up, and it left plenty of room for the spinoff. Excellent job, Brenda! I can't wait for Killian (coming soon!)

Synopsis

For Sheila, a lie is a deal-breaker. But what if it’s not a lie? What if it’s just not the whole truth?

Being a popular Dom at the nicest BDSM club in town would be the top of the mountain for lots of guys, but for Steffen Cothran, it’s meant heartache. He lost someone he thought he might be able to have a future with to his best friend when Trish Stinson and Clint Winstead patched things up. He knows he wants a relationship, but so far he’s had trouble finding that one person, the one he knows he's meant to be with, to make that happen.

That all changes when Trish and Clint walk into the club with Trish’s best friend, Sheila Brewster. Even though he's met her, he never really had much contact with her. But Clint has a plan: He’s looking for a Dom to protect Sheila in case her abusive ex-boyfriend manages to get paroled. And Clint happens to think that Steffen is a great candidate for that position.

Steffen and Sheila’s relationship starts casually and quickly grows into a promising romance. But one question makes all the difference, and when Steffen doesn’t lie but doesn’t tell the whole truth with his answer, Sheila’s left wondering if she can ever trust anyone again. And when Steffen’s little omission shows up on his doorstep in full-blown chaos, the relationship he’d had such high hopes for is shattered, possibly forever.

In the aftermath, Sheila sets a course for self-destruction that turns out to be more dangerous than anyone could’ve imagined. With no one to blame but himself, Steffen finds it hard to help a woman who won’t have anything to do with him.

Two broken hearts. One huge mistake. A few really bad choices. And a lifetime of pain if things can’t be righted. It may be impossible to mend the broken trust, and their love could be lost forever.

The second in the Me, You, and Us series following Adventurous Me, Steffen’s story in Unforgettable You is funny, smart, sweet, kinky hot, and heartbreaking. It’s a tale of what happens when you forget that there’s not a lot of difference between a lie and a partial truth, and what love really means when two people belong together.

Adventurous Me, Book 1

"Boring? Tiresome? Predictable? We'll see about that."

When Trish's husband of almost 30 years announces that he's leaving her because she's "boring," she sets out to find an adventure. Her attempt to drink her heartbreak away drops her onto a handsome gentleman who invites her to have an adventure, and Trish can't help but say yes.

She embarks on that adventure, but her path keeps crossing with that of another - Clint Winstead, a Dominant at the club, Bliss, and the one person in the place who seems to despise her. And that's fine with Trish. After all, there are plenty of other Doms there who want to play.

But when an annual event at the club throws Trish and Clint together for two weeks, both of them are horrified, not by the pairing, but by the feelings they're trying hard to deny. As the time passes, it's harder and harder to deny what they know is true - that is, until one nearly-tragic incident that almost changes both their lives irreparably. And when Trish realizes that continuing on with her commitment could cost her the ultimate - her life - she knows that it has to end. But does it?

Trish is the queen of second chances. But this second chance might just come at a price too high to pay. A little adventure is a good thing, but perhaps she's gotten far more adventure than she can handle.

About The Author

For as long as I can remember, I've been a writer . . .

and it has served me well. I wrote for local publications, wrote marketing and advertising materials, wrote for academic publications, and eventually grew jaded with the writing profession as I often watched others take credit for my hard work. I retreated into the world of 3-D art in the fiber and textile mediums and hid out in a world of colors and textures. But, truth is, there was always a story or two in my head. It wasn't until Nikki and I met in my imagination that I decided it was time to let those stories out, and I'm glad I did. My readers now get to enjoy the fruits of my imagination and, believe me, it runs wild!

On the personal side, I've been happily married to my lover and best friend for over thirty years, and I have two wonderful adult kids who've blessed me with two excellent choices of life partners. When I'm not writing, I'm playing with my three crazy little dogs, hiking in a local recreation area, kayaking, working out at the gym, tending my herbs, cooking, or doing some kind of research.
But I'd really rather be writing!
