WICKED LIES (Wicked Bay #3)

With only one week until the release of Wicked Lies (Wicked Bay #3) L A Cotton is sharing an excerpt with us! Check it out below and see how to win a $20 Amazon Gift Card!

“I…” The words lodged in my throat. I wanted to go to college with Kyle. To be at his side. To be his everything. And there had been a time when I felt that I was. But he was hiding something. I’d suspected as much for a while now.
Water sprayed around us and Lo and I shrieked as the guys, wet from the waves, howled with laughter.
“Jesus, Kyle, you got us all wet.”
“That’s kind of the point, babe,” he said around a breathtaking smile and heat pooled low in my stomach. God, how I missed that, feeling close to him. “Come for a swim?”
“Lo?” I turned to my friend, but she was preoccupied with Maverick. “We’ll be in the water.”
Kyle pulled me up and wrapped me into his arms, peppering my salty skin with warm wet kisses. “You know I love you, right?” His declaration seeped into my bones, washing away some of the lingering doubts.
“I know. Now last one in buys ice cream.” Ripping out of his hold, I took off in a spray of sand and air. It didn’t take him long to catch up. His arms went around my waist and we stumbled into the ocean in a tangle of limbs.
“Kyle!” I scolded, running two hands over my hair to drain off the excess water but when my eyes landed on his, my legs clenched together. “What?”
Eyes fixed right on me, Kyle stalked toward me through the water. When he reached me, he dipped down, snagging my hand and pulling me with him. My legs went around his waist as his arms steadied me and he moved us deeper until the water reached my shoulders.
“Kyle, you’re freaking me out right now.” I quickly scanned the area around us. People were minding their own business. Groups of kids enjoying their summer break. The odd family chasing their toddlers in and out of the gentle waves.
“I just need a minute.” He rolled his hips into me and I understood his words the second something hard connected with my stomach.
“Seriously.” I slapped his chest. “Here? In the middle of a crowded beach.”
“It’s not like I can help it. Have you seen you?”
Rolling my eyes, I fought to hide the smile tugging at my lips. “You’re a pig.”
“But I’m your pig.” He gave me no warning, slamming his mouth to mine. I gasped at first, overwhelmed by the intensity of his kiss, but as soon as his tongue traced the seam of my lips, my body relaxed. The familiarity of his touch soothed some part of me. Kyle’s fingers pressed into the flesh around my hips, searching, seeking, as our tongues swirled together.
“Kyle, I…”
“What?” He broke off the kiss, touching his head to mine. “What do you need?”
Our eyes locked, and I saw the secrets glittering in his eyes, a reminder of his betrayal. I didn’t doubt he loved me, I didn’t doubt his loyalty to me, but Kyle was keeping something from me. So why didn’t I push it? Why didn’t I demand answers? The truth?
“I love you,” I rushed out, sealing my declaration with a kiss to his lips. Hungry and desperate, he kissed me back, his tongue licking and stroking every inch of my mouth.
“Wahey, get some, Stone.” A chorus of cheers broke out around us and I buried my face in his shoulder.
“At least one of us is, Berrick,” Kyle yelled back to his friends. Maverick’s basketball friends, to be precise. But Kyle fit in just as easily. Even though he was a year their junior, even though he was a Stone, not a Prince, they still loved him.
Everyone loved him.
That was half the problem. When we went off to college and he joined the Trojan’s football team, and the USC masses joined the Kyle Stone fan club, where did that leave little old me? At least people knew me here. I’d grown up with them. I wasn’t only Kyle Stone’s girlfriend, but if I followed him to USC, it was a label I wouldn’t be able to shake.
“I’m going to go say hi to the guys,” Kyle’s voice ripped me from my thoughts. “Want to come?”
“No.” I forced a smile untangling myself from his body. “You go.” I started to swim back to shore, but his voice stopped me mid-stroke. “Laurie?”
“It’s you and me. You know that, right?”
Trey Berrick launched himself at Kyle and the two of them disappeared underneath the crystal blue water. With a resigned sigh, I walked the rest of the way back to the beach. Maybe it was a good thing I didn’t get time to reply because what would I have said? That I didn’t know? That I knew there was something coming between us? That as long as he had football there would always be something coming between us?
I didn’t want to be that girl: insecure and jealous of her boyfriend’s future. But it was hard to love the very thing that would one day take the person you loved more than anything, away from you.

To the outside world, seventeen-year-old Kyle Stone has it all. A future playing the sport he loves, money and status, and his forever girl by his side. But Kyle’s good at pretending; hiding what he doesn’t want others to see. Because Kyle has secrets, the kind that can change everything.

Pretty, popular, and dating one of Wicked Bay High’s rising football stars, Laurie Davison is living the life most girls only dream about. But behind closed doors, she feels like a fake. Keeping up appearances is exhausting, and the one person she should be able to turn to is the person pushing her away.

They say love conquers all, but lies destroy. And when the truth comes out, hearts don’t only get hurt.

They get ruined.

Note: Wicked Lies can be read as a standalone but will be better enjoyed when read in series order

Audible/Goodreads rating:  5/5

This is the third book in the New York Sullivans series, but the seventeenth in the Sullivans series.  I have only listened to this series of the New York Sullivans and have not had any issues in understanding the series.  Of the three, this is my favorite, which I was surprised about because the second one had more mystery to it. I found myself not wanting to stop listening and this took me the shortest amount of days to finish.  The narrator, who also did the other two, did a much better job in my opinion in changing her voice in this story.
Alec was not at all what I was expecting from knowing what I did of him from the prior books.  You really got to know him and understand his thinking much more in this book like why forgiving his father was so difficult compared to his siblings.  Then to have a major surprise occur that changed his business was something not expected.
I really liked Cordelia.  She was such a strong female leading character yet so very down to earth.  I thought the narrator did an excellent job portraying her character which made you feel like you were friends with her.  Cordelia really stayed true to herself even with how drastically her life changed.

The relationship between Alec and Cordelia was one of great friendship, being there for each other especially since they needed each other in this time of major unexpected changes.  Sure they may have just met under not so great circumstances, but they had this strange connection that grew over time and was not rushed.

It all began when Daws went to Tires Tires Tires to get a new set of wheels on her car. She was suffering from writer’s block, but apparently the complimentary coffee and cookies cured her. So she decided to bring in cars of friends and family so she could keep writing in the magical waiting room. Her social media musings had her fans in stitches and it wasn't long before inspiration struck again. This time...Daws was to write a sexy romantic comedy about a romance novelist who sneaks into a tire shop and gets caught by a hot mechanic. You can imagine where the love story goes from here. Eventually, the little tire shop opened their arms to Daws, even putting her release date on their marquee sign outside. It wasn't long before Buzzfeed got wind of it. Then Scary Mommy. Then InspireMore and several other blogs with followers well into the millions. WGN News in Chicago, Fox 10 in Phoenix and Canada Public Radio are all talking about the adorable feel good story of how inspiration can strike in the strangest of places.

Check back soon for the review to be posted. With the early release the review is not fully finished but I can tell you that so far this is a non-stop fun and easy read.

Check out these fun features:
She slaps her hand on her knee and bellows gallantly, “But you know what, Miles, you’re right! I should totally find a random hookup tonight.” “Whoa, I never said anything about random.” “Well, you’re doing it, so why can’t I?” I narrow my eyes. “You don’t seem like the random type.” “Maybe I should be.” Her eyes narrow when she leans in and whispers against my lips. “Can I tell you a secret, Miles?” “You can tell me anything, Mercedes.” She giggles and crooks her finger for me to lean in even closer. I’m so close I can smell the faint scent of her cherry lip gloss, and it’s not helping the half boner having a party in my pants. Her lips graze my ear when she whispers, “My writing makes me horny.” I nearly choke on my beer. “I’m sorry, what?” “My writing makes me horny.” She pulls back and nods her confirmation. “I’m serious. I have a sex toy that works really well and really fast, but I miss the heat of a man, ya know?” My eyes scrunch together, and I rub my fingers in the sockets to make sure I’m awake and hearing this all correctly. “I mean…I don’t really ever miss the heat of man, so I don’t think I know exactly what you’re saying.” “Fine, the heat of a woman.” She rolls her eyes dramatically “You know what I’m talking about. The heat.” I frown and shake my head. “You’re going to have to elaborate because I think of a lot of things when I think of women, but their body temperature isn’t one of them.” “You asked for it.” She laughs and leans in so she’s speaking low and soft and directly into my ear. “The heat of a woman is so much more than temperature. It’s the soft, sensual curves of the female form. The way your fingers dig into the meat of her thighs when she’s wrapped around you. Her smooth, sunken tummy when she’s on her back, the delicate bumps of her ribcage when she’s throwing her head back in pleasure. Tight little nipples in pillows of creamy softness. The fact that you could fold yourself around her and envelop her body almost entirely and still want more. You’re saying you don’t miss that kind of heat?” I blink slowly, recovering from what just happened. Her voice was a sensual, verbal caress straight on my cock. Then there was the warm heat of her breath on my ear. The deep husk of her tone. The way her warm palm rests softly on my thigh. Fucking hell.

Wait With Me by Amy Daws releases April 5!

When romance novelist, Kate Smith, finds her long lost writing mojo in the customer waiting area of a tire store, the complimentary coffee isn’t the only things that’s hot. But sexy mechanic, Miles Hudson, is just up for a friendly test-drive of her new book idea. At least, that was the agreement.

She manages to fly under the radar until the rugged and charming mechanic, Miles Hudson, notices the quirky redhead slinking in and out of the employees only entrance.
But she's way too intriguing to blow the whistle on.
Doing a test-drive of her new book idea sounds like a much better option.
Author QandAScared woman lying in bed and hiding under the sheet
Q: This book says “based on real-life experiences” …what does that mean?
A: Wellllll…let’s put it this way, the dedication to my book says: This book is inspired by real life events. Except for all the hot and romantic parts. My life is not nearly that exciting. So basically, it’s true that I snuck into a tire shop waiting room to write. And I brought countless friends and family cars in to write, just so I had an excuse to come in. But sadly, there was never a hot mechanic that caught my eye and wanted to jump into a friends-with-benefits situation with me. I’m pretty sure my husband would have wanted me to take a hard pass on an offer like that. ;)
Q: What inspired you to turn this experience into a story?
A: Wellllll, my agent initially! I started posting about my Tires Tires Tires excursions on social media and it sort of blew up. Like over 500 reactions to my posts when I was sneaking in…it was crazy. I’d never had so much social media engagement ever! And my agent was like, “Why are you not writing a book about a hot mechanic, Amy!” So, I decided to give it a whirl and let’s just say, the words flowed like that delicious complimentary coffee at TTT.
Q: Why do you think it flowed so effortlessly?
A: Well, I’m American and the majority of my books take place in England so that comes with a lot of challenges to make sure I’m writing true to their dialect. Basing Wait With Me in Colorado and using my own dialect was so fun and refreshing. It’s probably why I wrote it so fast! And I took a lot of the same crazy things that happened to me at Tires Tires Tires and used them in the story, so that gave me a great running start on the story.
Q: Since this book is based on your own experiences, how much is the heroine like yourself?
A: Kate’s voice is a lot like mine. Her humor, her sass. Her reactions. But honestly, that’s where our similarities end. She’s a redhead and she’s from Colorado her family isn’t very supportive of her career. My family is crazy supportive—so her background is truly very different from mine. As the book progressed, she really became her own person. She was super fun though and easy for me to write.
Q: That cover is HOT! Who is the model? Is it a real Tires Tires Tires mechanic?
A: Sadly, no. There’s a bunch of fun guys that work at TTT but I see them more as fun uncles…not sexy mechanics. The model is Austin Loes and he lives nearby, so we got to do the shoot in the TTT garage! It was a blast and he is PERFECT for this cover!!!
Q: Does this book have potential to become a series?
A: It does! There’s a couple of fun secondary characters in this novel that I’d love to tell their stories. And the recurring theme in the series would be that all the “meet cutes” happen in various waiting rooms.
Q: Where can readers catch up on the truth-life Tires Tires Tires full story?
A: I have a fun cliff notes version on my website:
Q: Are you still spending your days writing at Tires Tires Tires?
A: Duh! Complimentary coffee and cookies? I’d be a fool not to! Those guys at TTT have opened their arms to me and I love having a fun and unique writing place to go. It just goes to show that you can find inspiration in the most unlikely places.
