This is the first book I have read by Molly McAdams, but it will not be the last one.
Briar Chapman has her life planned out even though she has had a difficult childhood with parents that didn’t show her much care. She is engaged to Kyle, son of Georgia’s Governor, with the wedding only a few weeks away. Then her planned out life is turned upside down when she is kidnapped and sold into a world few know exist.
Lucas Holt has trained for this life and even though his mentor has told him to not buy the first girl up for bidding, he can’t help himself when she starts to sing in the middle of the auction. It is his first purchase and even though he knows it is wrong and his mentor will be upset, he buys hers and she may end up causing his death. Briar calls him the Devil and Lucas calls her his Blackbird as he is dark and she is light.
This book is a dark romantic suspense that will keep you guessing and many of the turn of events you will not expect. Lucas is such a mystery of a man and you know there is so much more to him, like why he ended up in this evil world. When it is finally revealed, it will not be what you had expected. Of course, Briar has her issues, like why she will only sing when alone or how she can’t stop herself from singing when she is afraid. Again, the reason were a surprise.
The author does a great job showing both Lucas' and Briar's struggles and keeping the suspense real. There were a couple things that I did feel were not fully explained or somewhat left unanswered. The ending felt rushed in wrapping the book up, which is why I am not able to give this a 5 star review, but I will definitely be recommending this book to others and look forward to reading the next book in the series.
