This Year's Love SYNOPSIS and TEASER

I thought I'd get you all excited for the next book in the Ward Sisters Series. Current planned publication date is June 23/24. Here's the synopsis and a teaser for Book #4, This Year's Love. The teaser appears at the end of Right Here Waiting, and shows when Annie met Josh.

Synopsis:

What if getting all you'd ever wanted...

Oncology nurse Annie Ward has spent her whole life competing with her older sister, Emily, in every single thing, especially when it came to their parents' affection. The ultimate insult came when her mother overlooked the fact that Annie was instantly attracted to handsome, beefy Josh Ricker from the moment she met him, and instead, pushed the man toward an uninterested Emily.
For over five years, Annie sat and watched her sister barely appreciate Josh while she listened to Emily's complaints. Left to the sidelines, her only option was to become best friends with the man of her dreams, hoping the tide would turn in her favor someday.
That day came when Emily, who was fed up with marriage pressure from her mother, finally pulled the plug on her relationship with Josh and promptly met the man of her dreams. Annie offered Josh a shoulder to cry on, and the two of them realized there was already a lot more than friendship between them.

...didn't turn out how you had expected?

But when you're in love with your sister's ex, the road to happiness is never smooth, even when he loves you back. Before they can get their happily ever after, Annie and Josh will have to contend with anger, resentment, accusations and secrets. And that's from the people who believe the best of their situation. Never mind the naysayers who believe the worst.

When a family crisis brings a familiar face back to Annie's orbit and wedding planning dredges up a past Josh would rather forget, the challenges get bigger and bigger. Will their love survive the pressure and last a lifetime? Finding love after five years might just be the easiest part.

Teaser:

Annie still had a year of undergraduate left, but at only one year older, Emily was done with her first degree. From the moment Emily had said she wanted to go to art school, her mother had complained. If Emily wasn't going to choose a real career, if she planned to attend college to meet boys and get on the mommy track, then what was the point of paying for an expensive school?
It made Annie glad she had always wanted to be a nurse. There was no question as to whether or not her mother thought it was a real career and so she never dealt with those comments. Nonetheless, like both her sisters, she stuck close to home for undergraduate and went to UMaine. As such, she was around to help when it was time for Emily to move into her new apartment for graduate school.
It was like any other moving excursion in their family, her father doing all the hard work while her mother directed the operation. They were debating who was going to help dad carry the heavy recliner up the stairs when her mother grinned and said, “Hold that thought.”
Moments later, Gail returned with a strapping guy, tall – maybe 6'2" or 6'3" – very fit and muscular but like it was naturally earned, broad chested, tanned, sun-kissed blond hair on the wrong side of a haircut and wearing camouflage cutoffs and a silly beer t-shirt. He almost looked like a beach bum.
Almost.
His eyes were a striking shade of blue, just a hint of gray in them, not enough to make them steely. He looked too kind and gentle for that. Despite his size, he didn't seem the least bit intimidating. He was the most beautiful man Annie had ever seen, and for the first time since she'd said goodbye to Jesse, she was instantly attracted.
“Girls, this is Josh. He's offered to help daddy bring the recliner upstairs. Josh, this is my daughter, Emily. She's the one moving into the apartment.”
Emily looked blasé. “Hello,” she managed. Taking a page from the Gail Ward School of Etiquette, she was polite but uninterested.
“We should get to this, Mom. There's a lot left and I have classes starting on Monday.”
“Of course, darling. Josh, this is my husband, Tom,” she gestured to Annie's father as he strolled toward them. “He'll tell you what he needs for assistance. Okay, girls, let's get back to it.”
Emily had already grabbed a box and gone back inside.
Before Annie walked away, she smiled and stuck out her hand.
“I'm Annie,” she said. “Thanks for helping.” If her sister couldn't be grateful, Annie would. She desperately wanted to get to know him.
Josh smiled back. “It's no problem. I'm happy to help.”
Gail grew impatient. “Anne, grab a box, let's go. I'm sure your father and Josh can handle the chair on their own.”
Annie rolled her eyes, smiled at Josh again, grabbed a box and headed into the apartment.
As she approached her mother, Gail said, “Isn't he handsome?”
Annie had to agree. She thought he was gorgeous.
“He's very attractive.”
“Don't you think he and Emily would make a lovely couple?”
What? You mean the girl who didn't give him the time of day, despite the fact that the guy was helping her move into her apartment and didn't even know her?
“She didn't seem to notice him much, Mom.”
Gail wouldn't be deterred. “Nonsense. She's just distracted about the move and school. I'm sure she'll notice him more later. Come on, let's get this stuff into the kitchen so we can unpack it.”
Annie just shook her head. Leave it to her mother to be oblivious to her oldest daughter's interests. Gail had never seen eye to eye with Emily on anything.
It turned out that Josh helped Tom move all of Emily's furniture into her new apartment, which was far and above the request Gail had made. As such, she felt obligated to invite him to dinner with them.
Josh was busy – much to Annie's dismay – but he thanked them for the offer. Gail suggested he look up Emily some other time, and her older sister nonchalantly agreed.
That was the end of that, hopefully, Annie thought.

And since Josh was also a student at UMaine in the same year as Annie, she hoped to run into him on campus sometime, away from her sister, away from her family, and maybe, just maybe, she could catc

Excerpt

From the corner of my eye I catch him peeking at me. I turn my head. “Are you cheating again?”

“What gave you that idea?” A cheeky smile is on his face, making me chuckle.

“I learned from past experiences.” I raise my eyebrow, challenging him.

He seems to take me up on the challenge, making direct, probing eye contact. He squints, his glaring grey eyes scanning my face, lingering on my lips. He doesn’t mask the blatant eye-fuck. God, this guy is going to kill me.

“You sure about that?” He scoots closer, closing the gap between us. His face is dangerously close to mine. The smirk on his face is as unbelievably obnoxious as it is sexy.

“I’m not that shy girl anymore,” I say.

“Hmm … looks like it to me.” He brushes one finger over my shoulder, and I’m thrilled yet again. These simple touches of his are so full of hunger, rippling with lust, it’s like I’m bathing in it.

Still, I won’t give in to his games so easily. He used to be able to silence me with just a look. I was too scared to act, but now that I’ve seen him full throttle, I’m not scared anymore. I can handle him.

“Hey, you can try all you like, but I’m not giving you my notes. You won’t learn anything that way.”

Hunter’s half-smile slowly turns into a grin as he inches closer and closer. His nose almost touches mine, I need only lean forward to crash into his lips. But I don’t. Self-control, Autumn. Keep it together. You’re in class for god’s sake.

“Oh, I’m not trying to get your notes. Not anymore,” he growls. His lips briefly brush past mine, but when I open my mouth and close my eyes to receive his kiss, I’m left hanging. Air catches in my throat as I open my eyes again and catch him licking his lips. A devious smile is on his face as he casually leans back in his seat.

“Jerk,” I mumble.

He leans forward, looking at me sideways. “What’s that?” His voice is darkened, sounding displeased. Good. I want him to know that I don’t like it when he teases me so much.

“You heard me.”

His eyes narrow into thin slits as his hand dives under the table. Suddenly, I feel his fingers curling around my leg, squeezing tighter and tighter. His inevitable stare is upon me as he slides his fingers up my jeans. I gasp, my breath faltering as he slips it up to my thigh.

“What did you call me?” Hunter says.

I shudder, my lip quivering as he rests his head on my shoulder. His fingers are digging into my flesh, I can feel it through my jeans, his possessiveness. He breathes in and out, his hot breath tantalizing my skin.

“You think I’m a jerk?” he murmurs. He slides his hand further up my thigh, and a tiny sigh escapes my mouth. “You know that when you call me names, it excites me, right?” he asks.
I nod a few times, holding my breath as he tightens his grip on my leg.

“You should know that the feistier you get, the more I’m driven to conquer you. You fighting me only gives me more motivation to claim you. You know why?”

I shake my head vigorously and he licks his lips in excitement. His fingers slip up toward my most sensitive spot and when they reach it, I swear I’m going to fall apart right there. I feel so ashamed, so embarrassed this is happening right now, in class, but at the same time I don’t want to stop him. This is so hot, I can’t even …

“This here …” He slides his fingers up and down my pussy, making me gasp. My panties are getting wet from his whispers and dominating touch. My body craves him. My mind knows it should focus on studying, but it’s turning to liquid.

“It’s mine. Doesn’t matter what the fuck you call me, but this is all mine. Mine.”

My hand dives under the table, trying to pry him loose from my jeans, but he grabs my wrist with his free hand and pins it to the table.

He grins. “I like the power I have when you let me love you. Claiming you gives me that power.” He rubs harder and harder, and I’m almost panting, trying to keep the noises from escaping my mouth. “And I know you like it. Do you think I don’t notice you looking at me like that with those hungry eyes? You want me to be this way.” Circling the pad of his thumb over my clit, I grow insane with lust.

“But don’t you ever fucking call me a jerk again.”

Today's Right Here Waiting teaser...

I'm working on edits, and I wanted to share this funny little snippet. Here's Neil talking with his best friend, Danny. Teenage Neil is definitely a smartass with his best friend, and this bit makes me laugh when I read it.

Why the sudden change of heart? You meet someone?”
Neil sighed. “No. Well, sort of. I talked to Meghan in the book store.”
What? No way!”
Way. We were looking at the Ireland display and we had a conversation.”
Was she snotty and bitchy to you?”
What? No. She was nice.”
Huh. She gives off a snotty vibe at school.”
Well, she was nice to me.”
Probably thought you were a kid.”
Gee, thanks.”
You still look young, Neil.”
Thank God I don't look Neil Young.”

Countdown to publication...a Right Here Waiting teaser!

We're less than a week from publication, and I'm making final edits. I wanted to share a great segment that I know will give you a real sense of what this story is all about. Enjoy.

She glimpsed the flash drive on the coffee table, then picked up the drive, the t-shirt and the stack of letters and carried them all to her office. As she powered up her computer, she inhaled Neil's scent from the shirt and smiled. The masculine fragrance of man and a sporty deodorant – with just a little bit of a laundry soap smell underneath – evoked memories of burying her face in his neck. When she inserted the flash drive into the USB port, Meg clicked yes on the autoplay menu.
She couldn't have been prepared for what she saw and heard.
Sitting on his bed in a black knit shirt and boxers, Neil looked like he had in their Skype call, the shirt identical to the one from the box. In his hands rested an acoustic guitar, his fingers holding the cobalt blue guitar pick he had sent her. His deep voice said, “This is for you, Meghan,” and then he played and sang the entirety of All I Want Is You.
Neil's voice, beautiful, strong, clear and melodic, soothed her aching soul in a way nothing else could have. By the end of the song, her eyes had blurred with tears. He said, “I'll sing it for you in person when I get home. Give me the guitar pick then. I'll count the days until I can see you again. I love you, Meghan.” Fade to black.
She watched it at least a half-dozen more times. What a precious gift from the sweetest, most thoughtful man she'd ever met. That kind boy had grown into an even better man. He would be the ruin of her, would make her fall so deeply in love with him over these letters and messages that she could never live without him. A modern version of a traditional wartime affair over love letters, rendered in vivid hues as a multi-media maelstrom. How could she help but be swept away by it?
It hit every secretly romantic bone in her body just right.
She took out a pen and her favorite stationery, a heavy, cream paper with cobalt-blue flowering vines snaking around the outside border, and she began to write.

Right Here Waiting teaser...

We're getting close to the end! March 17 is nine days away, which means I'm feeling the crunch. I'm working on my last round of edits - the nitty-gritty stuff - before I send it along to my editor for her final comb-through. She has seen the prologue, so I'm going to call it good and let you all catch a glimpse of the story's beginning. The rest of the snippets from here out will be smaller and more vague, like the last teaser I posted. For anyone who hasn't read Only One and seen the teaser chapter there, this will be your first glimpse into Meghan Miles and Neil Murphy. I can't tell you how excited I am to bring this story to all of you. Though I loved Rob Deacon and Liam Neely (and still do), Captain Neil Murphy has been my favorite guy to write up to this point in the series. So, without further ado, here is the teaser...

Prologue

Morning of Charlie and Dan's wedding...

Neil stretched his long legs, and when his feet hit the foot board of his twin bed, he appreciated both his sunrise waking habit and his military training. The ability to function on less sleep meant his jet lag wouldn't put a damper on Danny Williams' wedding.
He'd been looking forward to this wedding for a long time. For one thing, his best friend had loved Charlie Ward forever and making it legal completed their decade-old relationship. For another, Charlie's friend, Meghan was a bridesmaid. Though it had been several years since their paths had crossed, Neil could hardly wait to get a glimpse of the gorgeous woman who had been the subject of more fantasies than he could count for thirteen years.
He ran on the trails behind his parents' house, along the route he'd taken since the age of twelve. The trees had grown in the nine years he'd been away, the path no longer daily trampled, but his father had maintained the trail. Light filtered through the summer leaves of the maples, oaks, ash and beech, a stark contrast to the more desert-like landscape that surrounded his current post, Ft. Irwin. He welcomed the shade and the cooler, damp, early-morning air, fragrant with the earthy scents of the Maine woods. Too bad his leave only lasted a week.
Slowing as he approached the house, Neil inhaled the aromas of his favorite breakfast: pancakes, bacon, eggs and coffee. He rarely had breakfast waiting when he got home, since he always ran with his roommate, Owen.
For a little while, he had Beth around. But her idea of breakfast didn't match his and she hated to cook. Neil had probably cooked more for her than she had for him. He'd caught Beth sleeping with one of the soldiers from her unit six months ago, and had promptly dumped her. Probably best, his mother soothed in her Irish accent, that Beth was stupid enough to cheat before ye got attached. No point in marryin' a girl who won't cook.
Nearly every night since he'd ditched Beth, Neil had dreamed of seeing Meghan on this day. He thought about it on the plane trip from California last night, as he drifted off to sleep, on his run, and in the shower while he jerked off this morning. Chances were good that all he'd ever do was think about Meghan Miles, because no other woman had intimidated the adult Neil Murphy the way she always had.
The last time he'd seen Meghan was at Danny's college graduation party. In high school, Meghan and her best friend, Emily – Charlie's oldest sister – were three years ahead of Neil. At the time of Danny's party, Meghan was starting her PhD program in psychology, which Neil found fascinating. He and Owen believed that combat was ninety percent psychological, nine percent physical training, and one percent shit luck. The philosophy made them good at their jobs, because they knew that winning any kind of battle started in your head.
As soon as Neil understood that concept, dating became easy. Once he knew he needed to get over himself, girls didn't scare him.
Except Meghan.
For some reason, no matter how confident he got, no matter how many girls he had dated or slept with, he couldn't find the nerve to talk to Meghan again.
Today might be his last shot, because in two weeks, his unit deployed to Afghanistan for nine months. Even when you led an elite team of soldiers with an M4, you got no guarantees from the Army that you'd come home still breathing.

**********

At the sound of the alarm, Meg groaned. Why did the Wicked Witch insist we all have breakfast so damn early? She rolled toward the alarm clock at the side of her hotel bed and let her eyes adjust to the light while she listened to Pink's Raise Your Glass. By the time the song had finished, her head bobbed to the beat.
This would be a day for change. She'd greet the day in the right frame of mind and it would make a difference. Didn't she give this advice to her clients all the time? She needed to listen to herself.
She flicked off the alarm, jumped out of bed and bounced to the shower, the song still in her mind as she stepped into the steamy spray. Charlie's wedding could be the perfect place to meet a nice rebound guy, someone to clear stupid Justin from her head. Guys loved that stuff, right? No strings hookups at weddings? Wasn't that the whole point of Wedding Crashers? Then again, Vince Vaughn fell for one of his hookups, so maybe she needed to think about this more carefully.
No. Live for today. That had been a goal of her Thai retreat nine months ago, learning to appreciate the moment and embrace what it could bring.
Don't worry about the past or the future, reside in the now.
Given her past, and the fact that Bucksport High alumni would be attending, living in the now could make or break her enjoyment of this wedding. The alternative would be to get good and drunk.
Stick with living in the moment, she thought. Safer that way.
With her new-found attitude in mind, she embraced the day.
Later that morning, as she walked down the hall from her room on the way to the Bridal suite, she almost fell over. A few doors away, a muscular guy stood, struggling with his room key, a garment bag aloft and a duffle on his shoulder. His silhouette made her breath catch.
No, she thought. Shaved head, big muscles. Military. Too much like Toby. But then, as she got closer, she caught a glimpse of his backside and a grin spread across her face. Look at that ass. It can't possibly be the guy from LAX? That would be fate.
Grabbing the garment bag to help him, he turned and looked at her. Green eyes, freckles and the same shock of recognition.
Thank you, fate. This wedding might be great after all.
Live for the moment, indeed.

Sneak Peek of Right Here Waiting!

Ever since I started this story, I've been exited to share it. I love both these characters. Right Here Waiting is the tale of 29 year-old therapist, Meg Miles and 27 year-old soldier, Lieutenant Neil Murphy. If you read Back to December, you might remember Meg - she's Emily's best friend. You know, the crazy, sexy, adventurous one. Except, is Meg who everyone thinks? Maybe not. Maybe even her very best, lifelong friend doesn't know her as well as she believes. For Neil's part, he has been best friends with Danny Williams since the age of three. You haven't met Neil before now. Dan, you might recall, is the one who marries Emily's sister, Charlie. Neil hasn't been around much in recent years because he has been stationed far away from Maine.

Now, some of you might know (and I've probably said it here), that I'm a sucker for a soldier character. Do you think that would be any less true if I wrote one? No, of course not. And I fell, hard, for Neil while I wrote him. He's a closet alpha male, so used to being the geek that he doesn't even realize he's just as much an alpha as his Army buddies. But he's also a gentle soul, a kind man as loyal as they come. He's just the type of guy a girl like Meg needs - someone who can be everything she desires and can make her heart whole at the same time.

Here's the first little sneak peek at Neil. It'll give you an idea of the man he is inside his brawny, formidable soldier physique - the shy, nerdy boy he was before his hormones caught up to his mind and the Army made him into a force of nature. Here, Neil is helping his best friend, Danny, get ready for his wedding, along with the groomsmen from the wedding party (which includes Emily's ex, Josh). An hour or so before this, Neil ran into Meg in the hallway. See, Neil has had a crush on Meghan since he was 14, which Dan well knows...

I saw her. She helped me bring my stuff into my room,” Neil admitted.
Ohhh!” five male voices chorused.
Neil blushed. “It wasn't like that. She just took my bag for me and brought it inside.”
There was another round of male stupidity. You'd think he would be used to this by now, living on an Army base, but Neil was still the shy kid when these things were lobbed at him. When he wasn't the victim, he usually just kept as quiet as possible.
Yeah, okay. Make jokes. She didn't look to me like she was tramping it up or anything. She was just wearing summer clothes and no makeup.”
Wait until you see her at the wedding. And it's not tramping it up; Meg doesn't do tramp. She does vixen. Watch out, my friend. She has you in her sights if she helped you already.”
Oh, stop. She does not. She was just being nice.”
She's on the prowl. There's no such thing as being nice when she's looking for someone to take her mind off her man trouble.”
Neil just shook his head. They all thought they knew her so well, but he didn't believe any of that for a second. Oh, sure, it might be true, but that didn't mean they were being accurate.

Synopsis of Right Here Waiting

I'd written a synopsis of Right Here Waiting a while ago. But over the course of the last few months, the tone of the story has changed a little, and I wanted the description - which is the first thing people see - to reflect the true nature of the story and also to recognize that we hear from both main characters. So, without further ado, here's the synopsis for Right Here Waiting. I can't wait to share this story with you all!

Right Here Waiting

Every high school has that girl. She's the one the boys talked about in the locker room, the piece of ass they all wanted or said they'd had. The one all the other girls hated because their boyfriends had her first or because they wished they could be so free with their sexuality. Meghan Miles wore that mantle. Too bad the reputation hadn't been earned. Despite being best friends since birth with Emily Ward, the class goody two-shoes, everyone had believed Meg slept with every boy she'd dated and even some she hadn't. Well, almost everyone.

And every high school has one of those boys. When Neil Murphy saw Meghan Miles for the first time at the age of 14, his breath caught and he finally understood why real girls were such a big deal. Never mind that he would be a big, strong soldier someday, scrawny, shrimpy, nerdy Neil, a whole two years younger and three grades behind, knew he had no chance with the most beautiful girl he'd ever seen. But, when the rumors flew about Megan's kinky, slutty behavior, Neil refused to believe them, instead using the manners he'd been taught in a military home, and his keen skills of observation, to conclude the high school gossip mill had gotten it wrong.

A chance encounter her senior year with the sweet, geeky boy who had admired her from afar would change Meg's life for the better and would ensure that Neil could never fully expel her from his mind. Twelve years later, when fate finally brings the two of them together again at the wedding of mutual friends, it seems destined for them to make a connection.

But as a Lieutenant in the Army, Neil has to spend the next nine months in Afghanistan. Can their fledgling relationship survive a wartime courtship? Though aided by technology to keep the feelings alive, the reality of the situation means that Neil's life is as in danger as it would have been before the age of computers. If the worst happens, and Neil doesn't make it home in one piece, will Meg find the strength to trust in destiny and do the right thing? Or will she lose everything she loves – including her best friend – along the way?

Right Here Waiting - official cover reveal

We have a winner! After literally months of searching for the perfect cover image for Right Here Waiting, I finally found one yesterday. Spent some time creating the official cover this morning, and here it is! Meet Lieutenant Neil Murphy.

Later today, I'll be sharing the new cover images for Back to December and Only One. Now that I've found a look that I like for this book, I'm re-branding a bit for the other two books to create a consistent image. Actually, the final, printed version will probably include the series name, too. Otherwise, it'll be exactly the same. I'm very excited about this story, so I hope you're now excited, too!

As promised, an Only One teaser...or three

Did I say I'd post some Only One teasers? I did? Oh, right. Well, between editing Only One, editing Laurie's next book (Redemption Road, Book 4 in the Jackson Falls Series), living life and trying to finish my marketing class, it has been a bit hectic. You know, that Christmas thing. We bought a new home entertainment system for ourselves for Christmas (tired of sharing the TV with two small people). It's already set up in our living room. Which meant that last week, we moved the old one down to the family room. And then today, I had to organize in my office/storage space so that we can use the desks in there for gift wrapping. Which was great, given that it needed doing. Especially since I'm hosting book club this coming week, when they will be discussing *gulp* my book, Back to December! Not nervous. Nope. Not at all. Really. Okay, I'm lying. But I'll post the discussion questions in the next day or so.

Anyway, with all that stuff, I hadn't had a chance to post an Only One teaser that I knew had been fully vetted by my kick-ass editor. So, without further ado, here's the first one....

Jenna met his eyes, but it was too intense, what she saw there. She was too afraid. The look he gave her, it inspired hope, and she couldn't have that. This was temporary. She tried to look away, to close her eyes, but he wouldn't let her.
Don't. I want to see you. I want to watch you come apart for me so I can think about that every night.”
Jenna whimpered as he slowly drove her insane again. He was so good at this, had shown her heaven so many times. And his eyes, they said so much. They said the three little words that simultaneously terrified and elated her. But she did as he asked. She gave herself to him one more time, eyes open, and said a silent prayer to a God she didn't much believe in that the big L word might finally come her way when he returned in six months.

And here's the second....

She walked off the plane with trepidation. Her heart began to race in anticipation and she was trying not to have an anxiety attack. What if he didn't want her anymore? What if that electrical connection, that chemical explosion between them before, had been a fluke? What if the emotional intensity had fizzled? What if she'd imagined it all?

And the third...

Since when don't you hump anything that moves?” Mary Cate said, laughing hysterically.
Hey, I've never been that bad!” Liam grumbled.
Oh yeah? I recall a time about a year after you joined the Agency when you had a different girl every time I talked to you and half of them were nameless because you couldn't remember what they'd told you.”
Liam blushed. “Okay, for a little while I was that bad. I haven't done that in years! Not since before I started working at Deacon.”
No, you just fuck a handful of girls. Including the one you slept with tonight. You did sleep with her, right?”
Only his sister, and maybe Rob, could be so blunt with him and not royally piss him off. “Yes, I slept with her, but I didn't enjoy it.”
She laughed again. “You're a man. You enjoyed it.”

Only One Teaser

Here it is, a tiny excerpt from my upcoming novel, Only One, Book #2 in the Ward Sisters Series. Just a little one, because I'm waiting on some edits and I want the teaser posts to be finished work from here out. The official publication date for Only One has been set for December 21, 2013. For any of you who have read Back to December, you'll know why that date is significant to the series. And if you haven't read it yet, that book will be coming to Nook as soon as I get the file up to B&N specs. Maybe Tuesday. Tomorrow is Christmas tree decorating day and help a friend move day. Which means its not marketing homework day nor is it work on book stuff day. Enjoy the tidbit. More will come over the course of the next week or so!

The longer she looked at him, the sexier he got. Listening to him talk, hearing him joke with his family, just made the gorgeous outer package more appealing. At one point, their eyes met and the smile he gave her would have melted the clothes off a nun. Willingly. Damn.

Only One Teaser 2

This passage will be new to all but a few of you. You could call this the meet cute, but in Only One, that's not really accurate. A meet-cute is usually an unanticipated meeting, a happy circumstance that brings two people together. Liam and Jenna's story isn't nearly as simple as most romances for a variety of reasons. You'll see why once you read the book. For now, you can hear from Liam about his first impression of Jenna.

Liam met Jenna not long after starlet Lola Benedict had dumped Rob, while he worked security for Rob in Malibu, trading shifts with Brian and occasionally, Rick. One day, there was a knock at the door. Since it was his shift, Liam answered and expected a reporter or someone else annoying.
What he saw when he opened the door was a typical California girl – petite, brown eyes, tan skin, long, straight blond hair, bleached by the sun, wearing a cute, little, bright blue tank top and board shorts that barely covered her ass. Underneath, she was obviously wearing a cherry red string bikini and on her feet were a very sexy pair of leather sandals.
Liam almost came in his pants just looking at her. She looked like she was barely an adult.
He cleared his throat. “Can I help you?”
“Hi! Is Rob home?”
Bold. Most of them turned into piles of goo when they got to the door. They were all brass balls getting there and became blubbering schoolgirls by the time they saw the door open.
“Is he expecting you?”
She could be Rob's new thing, but it was unlikely; given that he'd had two epic failures for relationships in the recent past and both those women had been blond, Liam suspected his best friend would steer away from blonds for the foreseeable future. Besides, at 21, Lola had been young; this girl looked like she wasn't old enough to drink.
“You know, I can't remember if I told him today or tomorrow. Let me check.” She pulled out her iPhone and quickly tapped the screen until she got her calendar app going. “Yes. Today. Good. I thought I got it right. So, the answer is yes. He should be expecting me.”
“Okay, well, he didn't say he was expecting anyone, so let me check with him, first. What's your name?”
She stuck out her hand. “I'm Jenna. Jenna Ackerman. Rob's assistant in charge of social media?”
“Oh. Right. I forgot he was doing that stuff now. You know what, I think he's down on the beach. Why don't you come with me, I'll take you down there. He probably forgot. He didn't mention any appointments today. I think he's still distracted because of the Lola stuff.”
Jenna followed him inside. “So which one are you?”
Liam looked at her funny. “Which one?”
“You're the bodyguard, right? I know he's got several. I've seen you in pictures, but I guess I've never gotten your name. I know you're not Rick. He's the brother and he's a giant. No offense, I can tell you're not several inches taller than Rob.”
He laughed. “None taken. No one would ever mistake me for Rick. I'm Liam. Liam Neely.” He stuck out his hand and she shook it.
“Irishman, huh?”
Liam gave her his best brogue. “Down to me core.”
She laughed. It was a cute little laugh and it made him smile. “Where are you from?”
“Boston.”
“You like the Bruins?”
“Second only to the Sox. You a Bruins fan?” A California girl who was a hockey fan? Unlikely.
Jenna smiled, as if she knew what he was thinking. “I am. My favorite players growing up were Cam Neely and Ray Bourque.”
Holy shit, he was in love. He'd never met a girl who actually liked hockey and was this hot. Not to mention one who liked his favorite team and his two favorite players. He almost thought he was being Punk'd, but that show was defunct, right?
“Seriously? How're you old enough to remember them?”
Jenna laughed. “Well, for one, my dad's from New Hampshire and he played hockey, so hockey was religion in our house. And for another, I bet I'm older than you think.”
“Oh, really? So how do you know Rob?”
“I went to Minnesota State.”
“Not when we were there. I'd have remembered you.”
“You went there, too?”
“I did. I played hockey. And I know I'd remember you, especially if you knew Rob.”
“And how's that?”
“Because he was my college roommate for three years.”
“Well, then. You're right; it wasn't when he was there. Professor Deacon was on my thesis committee. He introduced us. I stuck around Minnesota for a couple of years after graduation. When I thought I might move back to Cali, get a job in Silicon Valley, Professor Deacon said I should meet his son, that he was single.”
“So this was recently.”
“Not that recently. It was after he broke up with Rachel and before Lola. Anyway, Pat invited me to a barbecue and Rob saw through the situation pretty quickly. We were left alone and he took the opportunity to tell me that he thought I seemed like a nice enough girl, but he had no interest in dating me, sorry. I told him he was too pretty for my taste anyway, and we had a good laugh. We talked about my thesis and he told me if I was ever looking for a job to give him a call, he could surely use someone like me. I jokingly said that if he could pay better than Facebook, I'd consider it.”
“I take it he pays better than Facebook?”
“That he does. Significantly. I called him once I got an offer from Facebook and I knew I was coming back here one way or another. It was when things were heating up with Lola and his name was all over the place. He'd probably have paid whatever I asked, but I told him to give me a number he thought my skills were worth and when it was far and above my other two offers, there was no question which one I'd take. I had plans for a social media roll out, but when everything exploded with Lola, that got put on the back burner for a bit. Now, we're ready to move forward. That's why I'm here today.”
“That didn't answer the how-old-are-you question.”
She gave him a sly smile. “I'll make a deal with you. If you were paying attention, you'll have all your answers. I went to college at a typical age and I did a typical track. If you can figure out my age within a year, I'll go out with you after you get done here today.”
Liam's brows shot up. “That assumes I want to go out with you.”
Her grin grew wider. “Oh, you do. You just think I'm too young for you. I'll ask you my age when I'm done meeting with Rob.” She said nothing else, just winked at him and walked down the path to the beach, where Rob was sitting in an Adirondack chair. Liam watched as his best friend stood, hugged Jenna and the two of them sat down. They looked back and Rob gave a little laugh.
Well, if nothing else, the girl got Rob to laugh. He hadn't laughed much lately.
