It’s crazy how fast the buzz comes back after you’ve been sober for so long.

Whiskey stood there, on my doorstep, just like he had one year before. Except this time, there was no rain, no anger, no wedding invitation — it was just us.

It was just him — the old friend, the easy smile, the twisted solace wrapped in a glittering bottle.

It was just me — the alcoholic, pretending like I didn’t want to taste him, realizing too quickly that months of being clean didn’t make me crave him any less.

But we can’t start here.

No, to tell this story right, we need to go back.

Back to the beginning.

Back to the very first drop.

This is my love letter to Whiskey. I only hope he reads it.

Excerpt

(pre-final edits)

The first time I tasted Whiskey, I fell flat on my face.

Literally.

I was drunk from the very first sip, and I guess that should have been my sign to stay away.

Jenna and I were running the trail around the lake near her house, sweat dripping into our eyes from the intense South Florida heat. It was early September, but in South Florida, it might as well have been July. There was no “boots and scarves” season, unless you counted the approximately six weeks in January and February where the temperature dropped below eighty degrees.

As it was, we were battling ninety-plus degrees, me trying to be a show off and prove I could keep up with Jenna’s cheerleading training program. She had finally made the varsity squad, and with that privilege came ridiculous standards she had to uphold. I hated running — absolutely loathed it. I would much rather have been on my surf board that day. But fortunately for Jenna, she had a competitive best friend who never turned down a challenge. So when she asked me to train with her, I’d agreed eagerly, even knowing I’d have screaming ribs and calves by the end of the day.

I saw him first.

I was just a few steps ahead of Jenna, and I’d been staring down at my hot pink sneakers as they hit the concrete. When I looked up, he was about fifty feet away, and even from that distance I could tell I was in trouble. He seemed sort of average at first — brown hair, lean build, soaked white running shirt — but the closer he got, the more I realized just how edible he was. I noticed the shift in the muscles of his legs as he ran, the way his hair bounced slightly, how he pressed his lips together in concentration as he neared us.

I looked over my shoulder, attempting to waggle my eyebrows at Jenna and give her the secret best friend code for “hot guy up ahead”, but she had stopped to tie her shoes. And when I turned back around, it was too late.

I smacked into him — hard — and fell to the pavement, rolling a bit to soften the fall. He cursed and I groaned, more from embarrassment than pain. I wish I could say I gracefully picked myself up, smiled radiantly, and asked him for his number, but the truth is I lost the ability to do anything the minute I looked up at him.

It was an unfamiliar, warm ache that spread through my chest as I used my hand to shield the sun streaming in behind his silhouette, just how you’d expect the first sip of whiskey to feel. He was bent over, hand outstretched, saying something that wasn’t registering because I had somehow managed to slip my hand into his and just that one touch had set my skin on fire.

Handsome wasn’t the right word to describe him, but it was all I kept thinking as I traced his features. His hair was a sort of mocha color, damp at the roots, falling onto his forehead just slightly. His eyes were wide — almost too round — and a mixture of gold, green, and the deepest brown. I didn’t coin the nickname Whiskey until much later, but it was that moment that I saw it for the first time — those were whiskey eyes. The kind of eyes you get lost in. The kind that drink you in. He had the longest lashes and a firm, square jaw. It was so hard, the edges so clean that I would have sworn he was angry with me if it weren’t for the smile on his face.He was still talking as my eyes fell over his broad chest before snapping back up to his sideways grin.

“Oh my God, are you fucking blind?!” Jenna’s voice snapped me from my haze as she shoved Whiskey out of the way and latched onto my hand, ripping me back to standing position. I’d barely caught my balance before she whipped around to continue her scolding. “How about you brush that long ass hair out of your eyes and watch where you’re going, huh champ?”

Oh no.

I didn’t even have time to call dibs, I couldn’t even think the word, let alone say it, before it was too late. I watched it, in slow motion, as Whiskey fell for my best friend before I even had the chance to say a single word to him.

Jenna was standing tall, arms crossed, one hip popped in her usual fashion as she waited for him to defend himself. This was her protocol — it was one of the reasons we got along. We were both what you’d call “spitfires”, but Jenna had the distinct advantage of being cripplingly gorgeous on top of having an attitude. She flipped her long, wavy blonde ponytail behind her and cocked a brow.

And then he did, too.

His smile grew wider as he met her eyes, and it was the same look I’d watched fall over guy after countless guy. Jenna was a unicorn, and men were enamored by her. As they should have been — she had platinum blonde hair, crystal blue eyes, legs for days and a personality to boot. Now, before you go thinking that I was the insecure best friend - I had it going on, too. I worked hard, I was talented - just not at the things traditional high school boys valued.

But we’ll get to that.

“Hi,” Whiskey finally said, extending his hand to Jenna this time. His eyes were warm, smile inviting — if I had to pick the right word for him, just one, I’d say charming. He just oozed charm. “I’m Jamie.”

“Well, Jamie, maybe you should make an appointment with the eye doctor before you run over another innocent jogger. And you owe Brecks an apology.” She nodded to me then and I cringed at my name, wondering why she felt the need to spill it at all. She always called me B — everyone did — so why did she choose the moment I was face to face with the first boy to ever make my heart accelerate to use my full name?

Jamie was still grinning, eying Jenna, trying to figure her out, but he turned to me after a moment with that same crooked smile. “I’m sorry, I should have been watching where I was going.” He said the words with conviction, but lifted his brows on that last line because he and I both knew who wasn’t paying attention to the trail, and he wasn’t the guilty party.

“It’s fine,” I murmured, because for some reason I was still having a difficult time finding my voice. Jamie tilted his head just a fraction, his eyes hard on me this time, and I felt naked beneath his gaze. I’d never had anyone look at me that way — completely zeroed in. It was unnerving and exhilarating, too.

But before I could latch onto the feeling, he turned back to Jenna, their eyes meeting as slow smiles spread on both of their faces. I’d seen it a million times, but this was the first time I felt sick watching it happen.

I saw him first, but it didn’t matter.

Because he saw her.

BLURB

Their past will become their future. Their scars will be reopened.
Clark Layton has the world at his feet. He is the CEO of one of the largest oil companies in the world and he has a fiancée most men would kill for. Then why, the night before his wedding, is he still thinking about everything he lost when he walked out on Dayna Cross?
Dayna didn’t intend to take the helm of Subsea Petroleum. But events beyond her control left her no choice. And she can handle it, mostly. She can juggle the long hours, the chauvinistic men, and a broken heart. What she can’t deal with is Clark Layton swanning back into her life and threatening to break down her walls.
They are rival CEOs and they are in a dogfight for a lucrative new pipeline. But as truths of their past begin to surface, business won’t be the biggest battle they enter into.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

As a child, Laura would make up plays to perform with her sister and cousins at her grandparents' house.  She enrolled in drama school and piano classes, plotting, performing, writing lyrics to songs. In school, she wrote screenplays and stories--she can remember blushing at her first use of an expletive!  Safe to say, Laura has always had a flare for the dramatic and spent probably too much time living in a fictional world.

At some point in her late teens, sensibility won out and Laura enrolled in law school.  She studied Law at the University of Durham, then studied for a diploma in Legal Practice and became a master of International Trade Law.

When her student days came to an end, Laura spent time travelling the world, indulging in new sights, sounds, people and cultures.  She kept a daily travel journal and wrote snippets of her adventures for family and friends back home.  It was on Bondi Beach when Laura was living in Sydney, Australia, that she picked up a tatty notepad and pencil and began writing her first novel (now safely tucked away in a drawer).

When her legal career brought her back to London, England, the writing bug bit Laura again and she found an idea that stuck.  From a small bedroom in the city, Gregory Ryans and Scarlett Heath were born in book 1 of the Vengeful Love trilogy.

Laura continues to practice law full time for a global business law firm and writes in the evenings and on weekends.  The Vengeful Love trilogy is complete (at least for now) but Laura has a lot more ideas up her sleeve.

RELEASE AND REVIEW BLITZ -- Amy Daws' CHALLENGE!!

Title: Challenge
Author: Amy Daws

Add on Goodreads

He’s her patient. She’s his doctor. They shouldn’t. But God, do they want to.

Camden Harris, the famously hot, hulk of a footballer is laid up in a London hospital. But his busted knee doesn’t stop him from running his well-practiced game on Indie Porter—his redheaded spitfire of a doctor. She’s not his type, not even close. But she could be the perfect distraction from the soul-crushing damage this injury could cost him.

Indie’s tired of her naivety putting a target on her back. As a gifted child, she’s let her education take the front seat her whole life. But a fling with a footballer like Camden might be just what she needs to grab life by the balls.

And he could be the perfect guy for the plan she’s been sitting on for over two years.

But when feelings make a final play, there’s no amount of medicine that can heal the damage to their hearts.

Anytime Amy Daws has a new book release I know I'm in for a wonderful ride. Challenge certainly did not disappoint! From the heat of the chemistry between Indie and Cam, to the sweet love and emotional story and the humor of the storyline this book was nearly impossible to put down. The London speak and humor are always a thrill for me and I always leave Ms. Daws' books thirsting for more. Indie was one of my favorite heroines and Cam? Talk about HOT! This is on my must read again pile!

Amazon/Goodreads Rating:  5/5 Stars
In Patti's Imagination Rating:  10/10 Stars
Challenge is the spin off series from the London Lovers that is the first on the Harris brother’s we met in That One Moment.  Camden Harris is the first brother to have his story told.  If you have read That One Moment you know that these four brothers are all famous footballers and that football is everything to them.  When an accident on the field lands Camden in a London hospital with a busted knee, things will never be the same for him.
Dr. Indie Porter is a young and gifted person that has spent most of her life alone with going to an all girls boarding school.  During med school she has her first true friend that helps her overcome several of her insecurities.  Instead of a bucket list they create another type of list to help her lose her virginity and experience life and relationships.  Her list covers three different types and as luck would have it the first type ends up at her hospital as her patient.  Does she risk her job and go for it with guy one or find someone else?
This book pulls you in right from the start and keeps you wanting to read more to the very end and then wishing for more.  Camden was not what I expected, he was so much more then you could imagine.  His family doesn’t understand things after his injury and how this has impacted what he thinks and feels about his future.  Then when his arrangement with Indie turns out different than what was agreed upon will he be able to recover from everything?
Indie’s baggage from growing up causing her to stay focused on her list and what she has mapped out until Camden starts having her thinking differently.  Belle is also a great support friend and the Tequila Sunrises they have are very important to them.  There is so much emotion in this book.  You will be laughing along with the puns and just the Harris brother banter, as well as shedding some tears over events and decisions that take place.  Several times I am frustrated with Indie and Camden for the decisions they make and yet you will be wanting to cheer them along.  Camden and his relationship with his family is something that you can relate to and it was great to get caught up some with Vi and Hayden.
I am looking forward to getting to know the rest of the Harris brothers especially if they have as much to share as Camden did.

We arrive at my building and take the lift up to my fourth floor flat. As I’m unlocking the front door, she asks, “Are you a good dancer, Camden?”
This question is odd, even for her. “Why do you ask?”
She sighs and leans against the wall just as I open the door. “I envisioned you were tonight when I was dancing with some bloke.”
My jaw clenches. “I don’t need to hear about you dancing with other guys.”
She smirks. “But I was thinking about you so it shouldn’t count.”
“It counts.”
“I think I like this jealous side of you. I might have to use it to my—”
Her snarky comment is cut off by a satisfying yelp as I wrap my arms around her waist and throw her over my shoulder.
“What are you doing?” she squeals as I savour the feel of her bare legs in my hands.
I turn and walk her inside, kicking the door closed with my foot. “Do you think you’re smart, talking to me like that?” I ask, completely unable to hide the smile on my face.
Her hair tickles my back as she giggles. “I am quite smart, actually. I skipped three whole grades in primary school. Did you know that?”
“I didn’t know that. Tell me then, what did they do to punish clever girls with smart mouths in boarding school?”
“Oh, naughty, naughty things.” She giggles again and I have a momentary desire to put her down just so I can see her face when she does it.
“I might need a demonstration.” I walk down the hallway and straight to my room, forgoing the polite flat tour, the offering of drinks, and the inane small talk. Our arrangement is for sex and sex alone.
“I might be inclined to oblige.” Her voice is breathy when we reach the quiet darkness of my room.

Amy Daws lives in South Dakota with her husband, and miracle daughter, Lorelei. The long-awaited birth of Lorelei is what inspired Amy's first book, Chasing Hope, and her passion for writing. Amy is a lover of all things British and her award-nominated contemporary romance series, The London Lovers Series, is centered around Americans in London. It's emotional and self-deprecating with lots of humor sprinkled in.

On most nights, you can find Amy and her family dancing to Strawberry Shortcake's theme song or stuffing themselves inside children's-sized playhouses because there is nothing they wouldn't do for their little miracle.

EXCERPT REVEAL -- Rachel Van Dyken's THE BACHELOR AUCTION!!

Excerpt
“Bentley!” Brock barked and shook his head.
“What?” Bentley shrugged then smoothly walked over to Jane and pulled out a box of black high-heeled pumps in a size eight and a half. “Your foot, milady?”
Brock rolled his eyes. “Give it a rest, Bentley. She can put on her own damn shoes.”
Bentley completely ignored him. “I love a woman’s foot.” He grabbed Jane’s broken shoe and tossed it to the side while his hands danced along the arch of her foot. His fingertips danced along her skin. Seduction by foot rub? That was new.
“It’s sexy, the arch.” He leaned over her, his lips parting just enough to give her the impression he was thinking about kissing her. “The curve of a woman’s foot reminds me of her body…see? Sexy.” He slid the shoe on a very terrified looking Jane and stood. “Perfect fit.”
Jane’s mouth opened then closed as a rosy flush crept over her face. “Th-thank you.”
“I bought you my favorite brand.”
Her eyebrows arched. How did he know about Manolo Blahnik? “Oh.” And then she nodded and said loudly, “Ohhhh! That makes sense!”
Bentley’s eyes narrowed. “Me buying women’s shoes?”
“You wearing them,” she explained. “That’s great. I mean, good for you. I’m sorry I’m so awkward at things like this, but it’s good you’re…you know…” She bobbed her head and sputtered. “Out and…comfortable with it.”
“Out?” Bentley repeated. “I’m confused.”
“Of the closet,” she said slowly then saw the scowl on Bentley’s face. “Or maybe you just like to dress like a woman?” She straightened her shoulders and tried again. “In either case, congratulations on your choice to wear women’s clothing!”
Brock about died laughing as Bentley’s horrified expression went from stunned to genuine confusion.
“You heard her.” Brock held his laughter in check. “Congratulations, brother. I’ll take care of the press release: Bachelor Playboy Bentley Wellington and his private women’s shoe collection.”
Bentley let out a strangled laugh. “Yes, and while we’re at it why don’t we remind the press that the clock is ticking on that auction of yours? Hmm?”
“Auction?” Jane asked.
“Don’t.” Brock shook his head. “You don’t want to know.”
“But she probably already does.” Bentley pointed out. “Unless she doesn’t read the news…?”
They both stared at her, waiting for an answer.
“I, uh…” She ducked her head, blushing again. “I read books.”
“How pure.” Bentley smiled and sat down next to her. “And just so we’re clear.” He leaned in as though he was going to kiss her. “My bat only swings one way…and I can assure you, every time I get thrown a pitch, I hit it out of the park.”

Jane isn't entirely sure that Cinderella got such a raw deal. Sure, she had a rough start, but didn't she eventually land a prince and a happily-ever-after? Until a party and a broken shoe incident leave Jane wondering if princes---or at least, a certain deliciously hunky billionaire---maybe do exist.

Except Brock Wellington isn't anyone's dream guy. Hell, a prince would never agree to be auctioned off in marriage to the highest bidder. Or act like an arrogant jerk---even if it was just a façade. Now, as Brock is waiting for the auction chopping block, he figures it's karmic retribution that he's tempted by a sexy, sassy woman he can't have. Review:

[Janet]

Amazon/Goodreads Rating:  4/5
In Patti's Imagination Rating:  9/10

I can say that I didn’t want to put this book down while I was reading it and was cheering along with several of the characters as well as yelling at them for the stupid things they said and/or did.
There were a few unexpected twists that keep me guessing and when the story ended, I was not ready for it to be over and I really would love to have more to the story.  This is the first book that I have read by this author and she will be someone that I will continue to read in the future.
While home on break from college, Beck Bridges unexpectedly finds his infant daughter, that he knew nothing about, left on his doorstep with a note from the mother that she just can’t do this any longer and she signed away all custody.  He takes on being a father seriously and his daughter is the most important thing to him.
First year teacher, Sheridan is excited on the first day of school and is impressed when the grandmother of one her students, English, asks her to contact the student's dad during the day since he is away on business just to keep him updated with how English is doing.  When she doesn’t receive any reply message from him, she isn’t as impressed about his parental involvement and then the mishap when there are parent teacher conferences, she can not stand the jerk.
Sheridan though is very much in love with English and she is one of the bright and happy kids in her first grade classroom.  When she finds out that English’s birth mother is back wanting custody of the child she gave up things are no longer the same and what will Beck and Sheridan do for the love of English?
This is a heartwarming story of what a single dad will do to protect his daughter.  I’m disappointed that I wasn’t able to give this a five star rating.  With some editing on timeline this could very well be a five star read.  The first time I was able to overlook, but there were other points that had me unable to overlook them.  I was actually reading a copy from Kindle Unlimited and not an advanced reader copy so this should have been caught by the editor.  There were also a couple of unanswered or not fully explained things that happened as well which left me needing more.
